DVD notes
'Visions' is now released, a DVD which blends beautifully
crafted natural imagery
with the music of several artists from Spotted Peccary Music. The project
was the creation
of gifted videographer Bill Francis who worked over a period of years with
the label,
combining just the right images for each piece. 'Moment Alone' from Painting
Twilight
is featured in the 'tracks section', and 'Shimmers' from Convergence is
featured
with a film by Paul Naton in the 'Special features' section. The final audio
track of Visions
is the track 'Earthbody Spiritbody' from Painting Twilight.

An additional project currently in the works, is an upcoming DVD of the 'Convergence'
concert at Shulman Auditorium in Carlsbad, CA. Bill Francis and crew filmed
the event,
which included the live performance of Greg Klamt, Deborah Martin, Mark Rownd,
and guest
artist Tom Griesgrabber on chapman stick, as well as multimedia graphics
by Greg Klamt.
we look forward to sharing more info on this soon.
ART notes
In addition to the completion and release of 'Convergence',
recent inspiration has included
much new artwork - Drawing, Photography, Digital/Mixed Media. Two juried
art competitions in Southern California selected several recent 'Rownd'
artworks for exhibition.
'Woman of Light'
was
awarded 2nd place in Digital media
by the San Dieguito Artists Guild,
and additional figurative works were shown in the 4th annual juried
competition at Canon
Art Gallery in Carlsbad, CA. New work is currently being shown at the Sedona Art Center, and Hillside Prints, both located in Sedona Arizona.
Update: New artwork currently showing at Goldenstein Art in uptown Sedona.
See the 'Gallery' section for recent images.
CONVERGENCE notes
Why 'Convergence'? As we contemplated the music we were creating, and
how we got there,
we realized first it was the crossing of our three paths, at an opportune
moment in time,
that brought us together and made the project possible. But also, we
had instruments
literally from all corners of the earth to play, improvise, perform with....
Native American Taos drums,
Australian didgeridoos, Tibetan bells,
African tongue drums and djembes, Russian ocarinas, Chinese and Native
American flutes, Turkish cymbals, and of course a garden weasel from Home
Depot. So with that panoply of instruments,
and all the diverse cultural and musical forms which influenced our music,
'Convergence' seemed a worthy title.
Hope you enjoy it! There are some audio samples up now in the 'listen'ing
room.
PAINTING TWILIGHT NOTES:
The final touches have been made and after much labor, painting twilight
is now a finished work! Much like a painting, one never quite knows when
first touching a blank canvas, what final form, color, and light will
ultimately take shape. Painting Twilight became something very different
from what I had originally anticipated. Expecting a few textural pieces
to create light and space between large polyrhythmic structures, the color
and shape of the textural pieces kept expanding, and ultimately became
the album. Very much a departure in many ways from the previous work, desert
waves, yet ultimately in the same spirit, I hope you enjoy 'Painting Twilight'
as much as we enjoyed creating it.
One difficulty
in completing an album such as this is to assign titles, with associated
meanings, to works which are inherently nonverbal communications of feeling
and spirit. Some pieces begin as a clear idea of an expression of something,
and some do not. And how numerous pieces, created over a period of time,
will ultimately relate to each other is a another mystery of the process.
In choosing titles, I came to understand that each piece was a reflection
of the spiritual house I inhabited at the moment of its writing. That
house may have been a presence of the moment, or the dwelling of a deeply
rooted memory residing in that moment. In developing the sequence of the
pieces, I came to understand the 'connectedness' of the works, my spiritual
path through them, and the perspective of the whole creative work in relation
to each of its parts. As I have understood it, both from within myself
and from relating to other composers, the completion of a piece of music
and its presentation to the world is very much a release, if you will,
of the music from within. But it is in your listening that the work is
finally complete, and becomes fully realized.
In gratitude,
mark.

Twilight artist info: Some artistic contributions on the release include
some ethereal vocals by Darcy Rownd, percussion by Deborah Martin, and
acoustic bass by Bob Beiner. The music was produced by Howard Givens. Additional
production assistance was given by Jon Jenkins, vocal sample recording
by MJ Denton, with additional technical support in sampling and sound design
from Ira Rubnitz and Tony Dimito. The graphics were designed by Greg Klamt.
Greg produced a stunning image (thanks Greg!) from a photo of evening twilight
in the desert of Anza Borrego taken by yours truly one summer evening.
The process of the completion and 'coming together' of the music, the album
concept, and the graphics was a great pleasure. Special thanks go to the
folks at Spotted Peccary (Howard, Greg, Deborah, JJ...) for their creative
input and hard work on this project. I'm looking forward to hearing your
comments!
